A downloadable game for Windows

Tetris Doubles is a game where two players play on the same field and work together to get their target levels for both players. This is a clone/remake of the mode found in Tetris: The Absolute The Grand Master 2 arcade game by Arika. Just like the original arcade game, completing this mode is not an easy task.

Each piece placed will earn one level and each line cleared gives a level. In order to reach level 300 (or 150 in quick mode), a line must be cleared, so the level will remain at 299 (or 149) until a line is cleared.

Default Controls
- LEFT/RIGHT moves the piece left and right
- DOWN will do a soft drop
- X on Keyboard and X on Xbox Controller will do a sonic drop.
  - A sonic drop allows you to still move the piece on the ground as it won't lock immediately.
  - A soft drop will lock the moment it hits the ground, so be careful.
- A/B on the Xbox controller for rotation.
- UP/Z on keyboard is for rotation.

Controls can be remapped in the Settings screen. Keyboard and Xbox controllers were tested, but any valid gamepad should work.

Speed
As the player progresses in levels, the speed will gradually increase. At level 100 (or 50 in quick mode), the speed will reset back to the beginning, giving some breathing room and then continue increasing until it reaches the maximum at level 300 (or 150). Note that each player level determines their speed, so if one player is further along, their piece will be falling faster than the other player.

Pre-Rotation and Delay Auto Shift
The player can hold one of the rotate buttons before the piece spawns to have it start rotated in that direction. A sound will play when that happens. LEFT/RGHT can be held to rapidly move a piece in that direction. It can also be held down before the piece spawns to immediately move the piece in a direction without the delay in the beginning.

Difficulty Levels
There's Novice, Master, and Grandmaster, each of them based on the grandmaster difficulty, as this is the original arcade settings. Novice is 50% of the Grandmaster speed and tops out with dropping a piece 1 row per second. Master is 75% of the Grandmaster speed and tops out dropping at 3 rows per second. Grandmaster is the arcade speed and goes into instant drop at the highest level.

Quick Mode vs Full Mode
Quick mode allows for a shorter game by reducing the goal in half and at the same time scaling the speed to match. The game will go faster, but the pieces will also begin to fall faster.

Winning
Both players must reach level 300 (or 150) in order to win. If one player reaches it first, they will continue to play and must keep alive until the other player also reaches the end. If either player tops out, both players lose.

Differences from the Arcade
This version has a few differences compared to the arcade game:

  • The next piece system uses the 7-bag system used in modern Tetris instead of the 4 most recent random system that Arika used.
  • There's a grid in the background to help drop alignment.
  • Pieces have a highlight border to help differentiate the pieces between players.

TODO/Future Work

  • Networked multiplayer. The quick implementation didn't work properly, so more work is needed get it up to speed.
  • Additional polish and bug fixes for any found.
  • Controller/keyboard support in the menus. Currently only works with mouse.
  • Support double keyboard or two players on one keyboard. Currently, the game requires a keyboard and controller or two controllers to play.

Hello, dhavatar!

I'm super psyched about this project. Seems like an awesome re-creation of TGM Doubles, which I'm psyched about.

I'd LOVE if you updated this project to add multiplayer. I'm dating someone long distance and we want to play Tetris together in a co-op fashion, and this project would help us do that!

Would be happy to tip you as well for your work. That would be highly worth it IMO. You're doing great work and making awesome stuff happen.

Feel free to reach out!
